When we arrived here back in March, Spencer was warned (quite severely) by his work that we needed to avoid the base at all costs on Tuesday night. Those are the nights that the anti-American protesters are let loose. My curiosity was sparked when I heard about these crazies. All I wanted to do was go and see what the fuss was all about. Who doesn't like a little protest entertainment now and then?
The first encounter we had with them was a rainy day back in April. I remember being really disappointed when I saw it. Yes, the upside down American flags turn your stomach, but that was the only thing that was weird. There were like two people and they weren't even protesting. They were sitting on the curb, talking to the police men who were there to keep the peace. I left that day wondering what all the hub-bub was about. Our visit today, however, was a totally different story.
We had about a million things to do on base this afternoon. Once the laundry, dinner and our trip to the commissary was done, we turned that all familiar corner to exit the base to see them. The picketers. I don't know if it's the summer that has sparked more hatred towards the US or what but there were like 15 people roaming the street. Just as we were about to pull out, a guy with a "Peace" flag walked in front of our car. That's kind of an eerie feeling. Then this lady held up a sign that said, "You are no better than Saddam Hussein". And although it looked as though she had printed it out using Word just a few hours earlier, it sorta hit home. These people really don't like our presence here. Spencer just laughs and says things like, "If they only knew what we were doing here . . . They wouldn't hate us". Silly Brits.
So the point of this blog . . .DON'T BE A HATER.
The End.
